Mount K2 is the second-highest mountain in the world, with an elevation of 8,611 meters, located in the Karakoram mountain range on the border of China and Pakistan. The peak was named as it is the highest mountain in the Karakoram Range. K2, also known as Mount Godwin Austen, is a person who first summited the peak. The mountain was first climbed on 31st July 1954 by Italian mountaineer and skier Achille Compagnoni with Lino Lacedelli. Mount K2 is among the most difficult-to-climb mountain among14 eight-thousanders. The well-known mountaineers who successfully climbed K2 describe it as a “killer” and “savage” mountain.

Every year, Imagine Nepal organize a K2 expedition by hiring our own Sherpa from Nepal. As a result, we have good experience operating theK2 in the past years in 2014, 2017, 2021 (First Successful winter Ascent) and 2022.

Facts: The weather on K2 is unpredictable. It remains clouded chiefly and has high wind. The risk of avalanches and rock falls are the other two major factors for the expedition’s failure on K2. The first woman to reach the K2 summit was the legendary Polish climber Wanda Rutkiewicz in 1986.

K2 Expedition 2016

The 2016 K2 Team ended their expedition from camp-3 after a colossal avalanche washed away the whole camp-3, where the Team deposited all the climbing gear, food, oxygen, tents, masks and regulator. As a result, K2 remained unclimbed in 2016’s primary season. Nevertheless, the team members wished to return in 2017.
